In my opinion, cloning is a wonderful achievement of mankind. Due to our ever-expanding minds, humans have always wanted to know the answer to those unanswerable questions such as: “How did we get here?”, “Why are we here?”, “Who or what made us?”, etc… I think the process of cloning was an unavoidable step in life as man continues to search for answers. (It’s NOT that man is “trying to be God” – it’s just that man wants to, in essence, know what the viewpoint of God is, so that we can answer these unanswerable questions.)
While the process of therapeutic cloning can get tricky, I believe that the genetic reproduction of stem cells is completely okay. It has been debated for a long time by these overdramatic political activists that these stem cells are actual people and that this is abortion. (There is a BIG difference between an egg that has developed for 5 days and between a zygote that has begun further development into an actual human. Think about it: would you rather us experiment on a living, breathing human being and then have him or her stay isolated all his or her life while we continue experiments on mutating him or her? I HOPE NOT.) Stem cells are needed so that we can find cures and grow “new material” such as skin or organs.
I have seen how a skin graft is done. (For those who do not know, the skin is not “donated” like an organ.) The skin is artificially grown by carefully nurturing synthetically-reproduced skin cells until they replicate enough to create a “slice” of skin large enough to cover the damaged area on the patient. A great use of our technological advances here! On the other hand, like the paper said, we have a lot of challenges to overcome before we can successfully clone and transplant functioning organs. So the idea of “donating” organs will probably be gone in a few years. (And YES….we need stem cells for this.)
Lastly, I read a few years back about a wealthy couple who got their dog cloned before it died. The new dog survived the growth and looked EXACTLY like the previous; however, the dog brutally attacked and mauled the couple’s child. This shows that while you can physically clone any animal (or human), you cannot replicate their personalities, backgrounds, mannerisms, likes, dislikes, incongruities, quirks, kinks, tweaks, etc….
Imagine that happening with a human. We spawn-out reproduced humans that turn into killers. (Wow….I just thought of the old 1982 film "Blade Runner", which deals with androids who are clones of humans, but they turn into criminals. They are known as “replicants”. AWESOME!) Judging by this, human cloning should NOT occur. While we can safely clone some animals, it is NOT wise to try cloning humans. (Plus, so much could go wrong in the process such as: mutations, growths, defective immune systems, etc… This will probably get another naïve, clueless activist group stirred up somewhere.)
That’s my complete take on cloning.
There are so many unknowns in cloning. Recombinant DNA is basically the only type of cloning that we have enough information about to perform successfully. I think there are too many failures with the other forms of cloning. Until we have more knowledge, real world tests on animals and stem cells should stop. Lucas may not see it this way but in my opinion, even a 5-day old blastocyst is a living thing. Is not a cell the smallest unit of life? There are so many etical issues that come along with cloning. I think right now scientist have had enough time to test and should start reviewing their mistakes in order to better understand how cloning actually works. They still have Recombinant DNA to work with and they need to understand how they made it work before they continue their tests.
To me cloning is a dangerous concept. I, personally, do not like the whole idea of it; however, I am very amazed at how far humans have come with technology, its astonishing, and a little terrifing. I dont know about any body else but cloning on animals seems morally wrong, because I am an animal lover I dont agree with them being tested agaisnt, I understand its for our, humans, benefits but nonetheless wrong. Especially if scintist see that its not working. I agree with Nicole, even if it was live for a day, it was still alive. Therapuetic cloning should be banned. I do think that organs being cloned for transplants is an exceptional idea, as long as it not harming its users, and its a beneficial contribution to to those in need. I think scientist should just hold off with cloning for now and try to fix their mistakes by doing more research, not with more experiments, Im sure they have plenty of data to work with.
My personal opinion up this subject may seem a little skewed to the right and sorry Mrs. Moon if this is offensive. I believe that every life is precious and deserves the right to an indiviual identity and genomic information. Therapeutic Cloning, in my view point is just as if not more immorally wrong than Abortion. This is an egg which if fertilized is a human life from the instant of conception. I see this as an harmful technique to the mother as well because they are using micro sized neelde to extract eggs from her ovary. This technique is done by replacing the DNA of the egg with skin cells to see if they can reproduce and the practice is very rarely sucessful. The egg is not seen as a potential human life from the researchers point of view it is a way to make money by saing they have a cure for dieases when they can rarely reproduced more than six skin cells seems to me like the money could be more practically spent discovering a real way to cure disease. In fact all forms of cloning are strongly advised agianst by medial doctors, and legislation passed by the US Congress because of the obscurity of understanding and sucess in the field.
My personal opinion with cloning also varies. I do believe that it's cruel to clone new animals who don't really get to go through the process of life that a naturally born animal would go through. But using what we know about cloning, which may not be a lot, to help maybe cure things like Alzheimer's and cancer is life changing. And if cloning could eventually be used to generate tissues and organs for transplants that would save so many lives. I may be contradicting myself when I talk about this stuff, but over i think the outcome of any type of cloning is a huge and incredible advancement that would help save many lives. But to get to these stages, and going through all the embryos that are destroyed in the process, to me is wrong. If we could make cloning more effective than 90% of the attempts to fail I think that it would change a lot of people's opinions on it and more people would be ok with the use of cloning human embryos for the use of new organs. That is my opinion on cloning and how it is used.
Before I read this article I was not aware that there was three different types of cloning. Recombinant DNA, could be beneficial for cloning superior genes that can serve as immunity to certain illnesses. It's definitely not what you think of when you hear "cloning," but since it's the most successful of the three types, it's the most useful.
But then you have reproductive cloning, which I feel is science's "glamour shot." I can't see why genetic duplicates of animals would be useful at all, especially if the clones are handicapped mentally, physically, or in their immunity.
The most touchy topic is therapeutic, which I think is useful for cloning genes that can be used for tissue regeneration, organ transplants, etc. That is truly remarkable. Imagine in the future, your liver fails, but you can grow back the offending part with the aid of stem cells. But like the ending paragraph in
the article, I agree that it would be very morally wrong to clone human beings, not only because of the risks and inefficiency, but because reproduction is given to us for a reason, and cloning in the hands of the rich and ignorant could lead to catastrophic effects.
To those against it, cloning presents as much a moral problem as a technical problem. For them, cloning is an affront to religious sensibilities; it seems like "playing God," and interfering with the natural process. There are, of course, more logical objections, regarding susceptibility to disease, expense, and diversity. Others are worried about the abuses of cloning. Cloning appears to be a powerful force that can be exploited to produce horrendous results.
Cloning may reduce genetic variability, producing many clones runs the risk of creating a population that is entirely the same. This population would be susceptible to the same diseases, and one disease could devastate the entire population. One can easily picture humans being wiped out be a single virus, however, less drastic, but more probable events could occur from a lack of genetic diversity. For example, if a large percentage of an nation's cattle are identical clones, a virus, such as a particular strain of "mad cow disease", could effect the entire population. The result could be catastrophic food shortages in our nation.
Cloning may cause people to settle for the best existing animals, not allowing for improvement of the species. In this way, cloning could potentially interfere with natural evolution.
Cloning is currently an expensive process. Cloning requires large amounts of money and biological expertise.
There is a risk of disease transfer between transgenic animals and the animal from which the transgenes were derived. If an animal producing drugs in its milk becomes infected by a virus, the animal may transmit the virus to a patient using the drug.
Any research into human cloning would eventually need to be tested on human. The ability to clone humans may lead to the genetic tailoring of offspring. The heart of the cloning debate is concerned with the genetic manipulation of a human embryo before it begins development. It is conceivable that scientists could alter a baby's genetic code to give the individual a certain color of eyes or genetic resistance to certain diseases. This is viewed as inappropriate tampering with "Mother Nature" by many ethicists.
Cloning might be used to create a "perfect human," or one with above normal strength and sub-normal intelligence, a genetic underclass. Also, if cloning is perfected in humans, there would be no genetic need for men. And us men are important! haha!
Cloning might have a detrimental effect on familial relationships. A child born from an adult DNA cloning of his father could be considered a delayed identical twin of one of his parents. It is unknown as to how a human might react if he or she knew he or she was an exact duplicate of an older individual.
As an indiviual I 100% oppose cloning, it is non ethical and unwise! Get it together America!
I disagree with the cloning of animals and people. It is far too dangerous and I don't see why we even need to do it. I think that therapeutic cloning is beneficial because we can use it to cure deadly diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer. I think that if we can figure out how to do it, doing cloned organ transplants would be good also, because people wouldn't have to wait as long before getting a transplant.
I feel that although the process of cloning is an astonishing scientific advancement, I disagree with many of the uses of the process. I feel that cloning animals and people alters the basic way of life and it can be very harmful in many different aspects. Although Dolly's cloning process was successful, many are not and we are harming animals for no reason. Why would we need to create an identical person or animal anyways? On the other hand, I know that therapeutic cloning can be extremely beneficial and can even save the lives of Alzheimer's and cancer patients.Due to the many risks and unknown problems that could occur with cloning, I do not think that cloning should be allowed. Maybe after more studies and experiments allow us to gain a better knowledge of the process, than only certain reasons for cloning would be acceptable but as of now, I feel its too dangerous.
I completely disagree with the idea of cloning any animal including humans. Cloning seems very dangerous and not worth the risk. I understand Some People would like to clone and may like the idea of using clones organs for transplants. However, is it really worth the risk? There seems to be way more negative outcomes than positive. For example, cloning can cause mental disorders, tumor growth, high rates of infection, and even death.Maybe I would feel differently if scientist were positive that cloning Was'nt dangerous. But until then, I am in total disagreement with the cloning process and feel that the U.S Congress should ban cloning.
I believe the scientific progress that we have made is remarkable. Science is growing and expanding its horizons every day. When it comes too cloning, I think we have taken our studies to far. In my opinion, I don't see a plausible reason to clone anything. I'm aware that cloning deals with more than just duplicating humans or animals, but our research for therapeutic cloning is so vague that we can't rely on it. To clone anything, we need stem cells. A major market for stem cells with be aborted fetuses. From a moral stand point, this is wrong. In conclusion, I believe scientists need to end the studies dealing with cloning because they are only going to lead to trouble.
My opinion on cloning could really go either way. I do respect the idea that cloning is wrong in the sense of it being a dangerous ordeal and we do not have all the full information that we truly need. It isn't one hundred percent safe yet and we do need to compile more research in order to sucessfully complete even half the things that we want to. Although, on the other hand, I think the Therapeutic cloning is very interesting. The fact that it can be used to generate organs and tissues for transplants is absolutely amazing. In the end, if this comes down to saving lives, then why not? If this method could help people and greatly decrease the need for organ donations, then that is a big thumbs up.
I believe that cloning represents the epitome of scientific advancement. While we still know very little about the cloning process cloning offers a future that could alter the way humanity operates. The science behind cloning will improve and become more successful until it is perfected. All sciences that we have developed in the past have started out as failures and imperfections and became more and more successful as well as useful. Some cloning has been successful. We are able to graft human skin on animals and even grow functional human ears on rats through the processes of cloning. Cloning can provide medical advances that could change the world. I believe cloning is a useful, promising endeavor.
In my opinion cloning is an unnecessary scientific method. When there are so many fails documented, lack of knowledge on possible outcomes, and positively harming human beings, why continue with cloning. It would be awesome if cloning could occur from a visual stand point and not needing stem cells, but that is not the case. This is wrong morally. Understanding that cloning details with DNA cloning, reproductive cloning, therapeutic cloning and more, I still have to stick with my opinion of some things are not meant for man to duplicate. We should leave alone what God has made. If God wanted His work to be duplicated, we would already know the answers. Why chance so many unknowns that could lead to a negative outcome.
So that’s my opinion on cloning.
i believe that cloning is the greatest achievement by science within the past years if not in all time. I think its amazing that we can take something like an animal and create a perfect clone of it. I'm sure that something like this is used by people who have the money. However with such a great achievement like this comes boundaries. I believe that it is OK to clone animals but is not OK to clone humans. i don't really have an argument to support my reasons why i just feel it is immoral to clone a person. I know that if i had the money i would look more into this subject in order to bring back a family animal such as my dog bear. This could be a great tool for those who can afford it to bring back lost pets. Another useful thing that could come from this is cloning organs that match someone in need of one perfectly. There would be no scares of whether the organ is bad or wont work properly. In conclusion i think that we should continue to research this topic and improve on it to prefect its uses in the future.
I think all cloning is wrong except Therapeutic cloning. I agree with Sam, when shes say if it saves lives, then why not. I feel that clonnig on animals is morally wrong. On the other hand if scientist can find away to make cloning completley safe, them I am for it. I think scientist should spend more time on other things instead of clonning. In the end, I am not really for clonning but, if it happens so be it.
I believe that the only reason to clone anything would be to clone organisms to help with transplants. other than that, there really is no reason to clone anything. I believe that the only reason to clone anything is out of curiosity of how far we, as humans can take it. We have successfully cloned some animals and that is great. But, why? I believe it is just to be kept up with technology, and to impress people. I always thought the idea of cloning was neat, but now that I know a little more about it, i just do not see the reason behind it.
Wow! I am super impressed with your comments! Very detailed and thoughtful!
